I've seen some awesome ones made with plastic sheeting from the hardware store, like for painting drop cloth or vapor barrier. There were some good photos on a DIY thread of a tarp made from 2 shower curtains. Cheap but effective
Looking for non plastic or polyethalen material
Depends on what you want to do with it. Car camping, you can use a poly tarp from Walmart. Backpacking requires something lighter like a sil-nylon tarp.
