    Sealing 10oz canvas

I knocked up a monstrous 9x12 foot out of some 10z (est. I forgot to weigh it ) PU poly canvas, a poultry 5kg all in. Lugging this baby will be much cheaper than the gym and I wont have to listen to gym peoples amazing new year diet .

Now, I'm presuming that I could use the same sealant as a lighter tarp (silicone based) but thought id asked beforehand, just in case.

Silicone should be fine. She's a beaut! Heaps of coverage with that thing.
    Good luck,

I'll second Bumbler's idea. Though the beeswax will make the canvas very stiff in the cold.

But also add in something I saw on a youtube video.

Be careful with the linseed oil, as it dries it creates heat and if the canvas isn't kept where air can easily blow across it to help dry/keep it cool then it could spontaneously catch fire.

A buddy of mine makes a wax product that is all natural and works great! Its called Henry's wax fabric treatment. I think he sells it for 10.00 plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

I just reread your post, are you sure it's PU poly? 10oz is the normal weight for a good cotton canvas. Don't know much about PU poly, which to me sounds waterproof already since PU is a cheaper way to waterproof nylon than silicone.

If indeed it has a PU coating, you should use seam sealer for PU fabric, not silicone, IMO.
(they are different products..check out the McNett website)

Unfortunately I don't know for sure what the fabric is as I managed to buy a full roll for just £2 at a car boot sale. Its definitely not pure cotton, I suspect a poly cotton blend, with a layer of sealant on one side that hasn't soaked through.

I'm pretty familiar with waxed canvas (recently made a waxed canvas bedroll) Which makes me certain that the meted waxed couldn't penetrate to expand the fibres as it should.

I may just hangit outside and see if it is fine without extra sealant as its rained ALL *?!~ winter !

the local fabric store have 10oz/sq yard uncoated Expedition Canvas at 65" wide in Carhartt Brown.... I have doubt that what you have is PU coating...that looks like the stuff the British Army used to use to make their cots, tent pieces and Pattern 58 gear with... similar to the USGI canvas tents. could have been material for the NATO tarps?
