Back before underquilts we had the Garlington Taco. Basically a tarp hung under your hammock, you filled it with leaves or clothing or whatever was handy, and it insulated you.
I know that UQ's work better (down > duff) but the weight and packability was pretty awesome. Am I missing a reason I don't hear about them?
it always seemed to be the next step in the poor-man's upgrade path to get a few more degrees out of the hammock.
(it's hard to justify an UQ when you live in the humid south)
