Airplane Camping: Hanging with no trees

My friend who owns an airplane called me at the last minute to go airplane camping. This has been on our wish list for a while. We are always looking for new ways to go camping with the airplane.

We left the craziness of SoCal to Santa Catalina Island just 21 miles from the coast of Los Angeles.

A 30 minute flight gave us some solitude and we were the only ones camping. A wild fire in the San Gabriel mountains nearby enabled us to be treated to a beautiful sunset, moonrise and sunrise. We could also admire the city lights from afar.

I experimented with some time lapse video footage taken with my GoPro and iPhone cameras.

    Enjoy!

I remember my Dad took me to Oshkosh in the early 70's and so many folks were camping under the wings of their airplanes. Being in the boy scouts at the time, I was all about it back then. My Dad had a 46' Aeronica Champ which is a rag-wing tail dragger that could land nicely on the grass strips common at lots of state parks back then. Too bad we didn't actually do camping from the plane while he was still living. I do remember him wing waving on low passes over a few of our scout camping trips. That was the signal for one of the leaders to drive out to the strip and pick him up. Any scout in our troop could get a ride just for the asking and most of the older scouts eventually earned their aviation merit badge, a handful of us even went on to complete ground school.

Hmm, I may have to postpone a new tarp and buy myself an airplane. Awesome adventure!

I always thought it was 26 miles. Must be continental drift since the song was written.
