Tomorrow is an ice and sleet day here so we aren't going anywhere. Temp is supposed to be in the mid-30s. My house is built on pilings and is open underneath. So, I can run a test.

I have a newly made 10 ft double layer hammock. 1.9 oz inside - 1.1 oz outside.

I also have this quilt I made last year from an old sleeping bag thinking I was going to place it inside my Hennessy undercover.

I never tried it as I got into other projects.

It is 71" long and 29" wide by about 1.25" thick - filled with cheap poly insulation. During the day tomorrow I will go sling up the hammock and insert this quilt. Get out my DIY CS Apex 5 TQ and climb in. I'll report back!

You guys are awesome... seriously, I love this forum. Lots of great ideas & different experiences... I appreciate everyone's thoughts & comments so far!

I guess I originally thought of the whole idea simply because I can be pretty comfy down into the 50's with just a fleece liner, so I figured an extra bag stuffed between the layers would work ok for Gulf Coast "winter". And yes, I could go buy a CCF pad, but I figured the stuffed bag idea would give more coverage.

    Thanks again for your indulgences!

    Thanks, Pappy!

Quick hijack of my own thread- why a dual layer with 1.9 inside and 1.1 outside? I would think it'd be better the other way around... what am I missing?

    I am 5' 11" and about 212 lb.

The 1.9 layer is there to support me.

The 1.1 layer is there so I can:
    - Stuff things like quilts or pads in there
    - Get some protection from mosquitoes from underneath (separate bug net)
    - plus I get a little extra protection from failures of the 1.9 layer.

The hammock has a quad Knotty mod and is made with more ideas from many forum members.

From a Pound Hawg perspective I would be interested in any results using a 3 pound or more sleeping bag.

Again - the quilt rolls up 8" x 12" and weighs 21.8 oz.

    Good Morning!

Set up downstairs for an hour this morning. The outside thermometer was registering 33 deg. The openings on my DL hammock are about 15" long at the top left and bottom right sides. I had to roll the quilt up into a cylinder to get it in. It took some doing to get it spread out.

First attempt climbing in, the quilt was not under my left shoulder and there was no hope of moving it while I was in the hammock. Got out, readjusted, got back in. Better. After about 15 minutes, I realized my back and butt were not exactly cold, but they weren't exactly warm either. After sitting up several times and fooling around with the placement of the quilt, it was obvious that the thing was not going to stay where I wanted it without some form of attachment to hold it in place.

I decided to try it with the quilt inside the UQP instead of the hammock itself. Now we should point out here that Donna at 2QZQ never intended this UQP to be a load bearing device. It is suspended with like 1/16" shockcord. I pulled the shockcord as tight as I could get it an the side opposite the one I get into the hammock. After I got in, I tightened the other side of the UQP as tight as I could get it. No matter what I did, the quilt slid to the middle. I could get it up under my shoulders but the rest was sort of gathered under my thighs and butt. OK warm shoulders, OK somewhat warm butt, cold feet!

    Conclusions:
    - The sleeping bag quilt between layers of the hammock is no warmer than an 1/8" pad and is even more of a PITA to keep in place
    - To house the pad in the UQP would require stronger (heavier) suspension to support it properly.
    - In either case, some sort of attached lines would be needed to keep the quilt stretched out and open

Say . . . that is starting to sound like the suspension for an . . . UnderQuilt!!
