I am hoping the thunderstorms are the afternoon ones due to the heat. I can live with that.

I haven't backpacked up there in a few yrs so I am looking forward to it. We are making our way up and over to the lodge and then to Twin Arches. Just making a loop trip out of it

    Thumbs up

I leave Monday morning (Memorial Day) at 6:00 with LilRed for the Appalachian Trail at James River in Virginia for approx a week and a half. LilRed and I hike together to Rockfish Gap (beginning of the Shenandoah National Park). She goes on and my wife picks me up and the two of us go back to Damascus to hike a couple more days around the Grayson Highlands on the AT. Then back home to Nashville around June 4th or 5th.

Big South Fork was great this past weekend. Only rain was Sunday night until we got up Monday morning. We could hear and see the storms but they didn't make it to us. Always cool to hear the rain coming towards you, then upon you then going past you in the trees

Had great weather all weekend except Sunday afternoon. Had some thunder storms roll in around 3ish. The ground dwellers were happy I had my tarp when I strung it up just before the rains came.

Few Pictures of our setups the first night where we hung with out a tarp.

yes you do. It is an underused park. I think we saw 2 day hikers and 3 backpackers all in the 1st 3 hrs. Didn't see a soul on the trail after that. We did stop at the hostel and get a coke and to eat our lunch there. We did see some folks who had day hiked down just to eat lunch at the hostel

so was I. I was a little worried about Laurel Fork Creek with the rain Sunday night. The last 2-3 creek crossings were about mid calf high. The other spots were below the top of my boot.

What's your favorite weekend trail & hang at BSF. We always bypass the area on our way to GSMNP, and have said, yea, we need to go there. Do you come to Red River Gorge any, that's our playground.

I live in Nashville so it is an easy drive to Big South Fork. I like Red River Gorge except it takes so long to get there from here.

I have backpacked quite a few trails up there. I think my favorite so far has been the southern terminus of the Sheltowee Trace. You start at Pickett State Park (right beside BSF) and hike to Peters Mountain. It is about 20 miles I think. Another good one is the John Muir Trail that starts at Leatherwood Ford and goes up towards Station Camp Crossing. We took Laurel Fork Creek Trail back down towards Bandy visitor center. Only thing I can complain about is the ticks, they are terrible up there!!!!

The John Muir Trail in Big South Fork is 50+ miles long and if you add the section in Pickett State park it is about 62 miles.

The best book IMO is Hiking the Big South Fork by Brenda G. Deaver (Author), Jo Anna Smith (Author), Howard Ray Duncan (Author). They have all of the trails listed, day hikes, backpacking loops or end to end trips, the Sheltowee Trace, Yahoo Falls loop, etc
