Talking Hello to all from Tucson Arizona...

I got bit by the hammock bug a little over a year ago when I decided to order one of those military jungle hammock knock-offs... A Rothco, I believe it was.
It's the hammock encased in the tarp in my avatar.

On the first night out, I was proud of my mostly DIY shelter/sleep system until I tipped over. The third time I gave up and moved to the ground as a bivy.

When I woke up in the morning, it hit me. I had to have a lower center of gravity for stability. So I went to work with my survival knife, a needle out of my sewing kit and some fishing line.

The second night out was the single most restful night I have ever had outdoors.

I have constructed an entire plethora of gear since, and am looking forward to the temperature dropping so I can test a bunch of it, including an over-sized sleeping bag as a Pea pod....

Greetings fellow Tucsonan! I have hammock camped pretty much everywhere within about 100 miles of the city. Let me know if you have any questions about where to hang.

Its plenty cold atop Mt Lemmon right now if you are looking to "go low".

    You're in Tucson?!

    Great!!

I was just getting ready to go... probably next week. I like to go during the week so there's no traffic. I'll probably go up the mountain but they close the good places for winter.

Can you recommend a couple of places?

Yep, moved here 4 1/2 years ago from Minnesota.

The closest places are all in the Catalinas of course. The lowest good place is Sycamore Canyon, from the Prison Camp TH. If you are looking for cold, just drive up to the top by the observatory, and hike out to a scenic vista and hang anywhere. My favorite close spot is Old Camp up Romero Canyon, though you need an overnight permit at Catalina State Park for that.

The Rincons are nice, but you need a permit from Saguaro NP. Grass Shack campsite is phenomenal.

The Santa Ritas are wonderful. You can hang anywhere as long as you are 2+ miles from the TH. I normally go up Madera Canyon, but done a few up the east side trails.

The Huachucas are stunning, was focusing on that range last summer.

Headed to the Big Ditch in 10 days, but that will be ground camping.

There's some nice spots in the Supersitions like Reavis Ranch, but need a high-clearance Jeep to get to the TH I like.

    Nice....

You definitely seem to know the places, alright...

I'll go ahead and PM you on this.

    Thanks!

Welcome from Northern California. I always liked Tucson. I spent a couple years of my life just a little bit south-east of there in Sierra Vista. Gorgeous country if you ask me.
    - We're never going to survive this!!
    - Nonsense. You only say that because no one ever has.
