I cannot believe that I just read all 16 pages of this. Some really nice stands! One idea that came to mind is to use longer base runners and put in a stop on the outer upright. Or just move your outer bolt holes in to a point that would allow the stop insert. The stop should be cut at the 60 degree angle. If I missed this design idea in all of the reading I plead the fifth. I might just have to build one of these soon.

    Retrofit Partially Successful

Completed retrofit of uprights, extending them to 7'6", in the hope of better accommodating my Clark NX-250. The resulting span is approximately 15', and the height approximately 6'. I'm much happier with the stand now, in that my tarp rides much higher, and the stand still feels remarkably stable.

However, when I set the suspension to afford the appropriate sag, I still find myself a bit close to the upright supports. Not bad, but enough that I'll be re-installing the padding I used on the first (6' upright) iteration just in case, or incorporating a structural ridgeline (now that I have room above the hoops) to set the sag and then gain some altitude by taking up some suspension line.

In any case, it'll now serve perfectly as the "backyard test lab" I was aiming for. Before/after photos below. Note the padding, and the as yet un-watersealed retrofit uprights. A good strong stand. Thanks again for sharing the design.

I've been following this thread with interest since it started, and I think it will serve very well for an indoor Brazilian in a small odd-shaped loft room (45* ceiling above a 4.5-ft kneewall; 11 ft wide at 6.5 ft high). Brazilian hammocks hang best with about 45* sag, so I'm thinking of making the base a little longer than the original design to have more end-clearance under the upright supports, and make the uprights about 6.5 ft from the floor and a little more vertical, maybe about 75* instead of 60*. Can anyone please advise me how close to vertical I can make the uprights without compromising stability/strength? Thanks!

Not sure, but I'd like to suggest searching for a post on HF titled "Shear force for 2x4" (include the quotes in your search) for some elucidating information. Sorry that I can't be of more help. Good luck!

Thanks, Pax Hammockus! I just did that search, and now I suspect the longer, more vertical 2x4's might twist and break with the "live" weight at the top. I think I'd better consider other possible tall stand designs for that little room. The quest continues!

Re: 2x4 PHS (Portable Hammock Stand)

Well I finally got around to building one of these stands. I tinkered with the design a bit, just to see if it would work. Seems to be working great. I beefed up the support a little and the uprights. Doubled the uprights. Now I'm thinking since its a little heavier, I'll probably switch out the 2*4 cross supports for 4*4's. Guess that makes it a little less portable

Here's the blocking for the uprights

    2x4 PHS (Portable Hammock Stand)

I think I am going to try to build me one this weekend.
We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.

    2x4 PHS (Portable Hammock Stand)

43#'s- Pressure treated DRY (not new), without stabilizers. Straight #2 studs untreated may shaves a few more pounds, but will not be rot resistent.

Anyone have weights on an indoor model??
