Use stainless hardware and don't skimp on the fender washers. Quite a bit of force is applied and the bolts tend to bend a bit over time. I've also teardrop mortised my upright with their supports. This is done by trimming a teardrop notch in the upright where a mirror cut end on the stanchion mates.

the tension of the hammock lines keeps the joint in position without the need for a bolt in the joint- eliminating the issue of bent bolts being hard to pull and reinstall for takedown. Further weight applied in the hammock further solidifies the joint.

Thanks, Opie - reassuring to know.

Tieing it down isn't possible in my case - I'll be using it indoors in quarters, as stated above.

Appreciate the info, Trail - I'm still working on what I can get where - basically, what I can scrounge. Knowing the tinkerer that I'll be working with to build this, we'll probably be using 1/2" hardware at least, but I'll mention the mortising to him. How well does it work when there's nobody in the hammock? Any slippage? Do you end up having to "reset" anything when you get in? How deep is the mortise? Do you have pics of the support brace end?

    He's from a general contracting/construction background, so I'm confident it'll be well-built.

I recently removed the wing nuts and went with "T" Nuts, which bury themselves in the wood and stay fixed. For the 2 bolts that are removed for folding, I used OldGringo's suggesion of stainless eye-bolts. I can tighten them better than I can with wing nuts, or use a stick/screwdriver/whatever to get more leverage.

I agree on using stainless hardware, it will live longer...

If you do use carriage bolts, get the anti-turners: washers with square cutouts and locking blades for carriage bolts... I ran into these in the hardware store last week (didn't know they existed...)

    Best of luck!

I just built one of these stands last night! It was very simple to build and looks great. I used T-Nuts and Eye Bolts with washers as suggested in various threads. Just what I need to further fuel my hammock addiction!

What are those things sticking up from the uprights? Lightening rods?

We (dad, brother, and me) built this stand last weekend and works great! A huge improvement on our first one, but the problem were having is it won't fold down right. The 2 4' support braces get in the way of each other any suggestions?

How are the braces getting in each other's way? If you built it the way that TrailH4X did, the brace and corresponding attachment arm will nest down on top of each other, as below.

    *not to scale*
    ----------------outside beam----------------
    LH arm----LH brace--------------------------
    --------------------------RH brace----RH Arm
    ----------------outside beam----------------
