Post 2x4 PHS (Portable Hammock Stand)

This one took a bit of tinkering... After building headchange4u's stand to get my head in the game on basic frame concepts, I got to thinking about material weights and footprint sizes. I based the sizing of this design to fit the HH Expedition Asym and Scout and my reduced capacity for carrying multiple loads of really heavy things.

    Materials:
    (4) 6'-2x4's, bottom frames and uprights
    (4) 4'-2x4's, (2) for upright braces & (2) for ground outriggers
    (4) 1'-1x4's, upright brace stabbing guides
    (4) 4”-2x4’s, spacer blocks (view pic of folded from bottom)
    (10) 1/4" steel bolts w/ nuts and hardware
    (2) 6"-1/4" eye bolts, optional for tie offs on uprights
(50') 550 cord, for upright guy lines

Stand set w/ HH Scout in “day lounger mode.” I've yet to add the lower set of eye bolts for my son’s proper set height, but you can see where they will be by looking at the location of the constrictor knot points. This will be my son's setup (with a slightly lower tarp set for LA summer afternoon storms). ZipperQueen currently has my HH Exped.

The base is 6' long and the angled uprights are 6'. Distance between top eye bolts is 12’4” when outriggers are set at 60° from ground. Takes about 7-8 minutes to setup. Here's how it works:

    Folded stand (side view):
Removal of two outrigger bolts allows for them to swing under main line of stand body making the assembly easier to carry. The outriggers might possibly be eliminated from the design with the use of the guy lines as listed, but I have not tested the setup and am weary about line stretch in heavy weather.

    Lift uprights and stabilizers:

    Secure uprights with stabilizers:
(Initially, I drilled holes through the stabbing guides and uprights and secured it with a bolt. I have since notched the uprights and recut the stabilizers to fit the notches eliminating the need for installing and removing bolts during setup and takedown).

    Setup opposite side:

    Setup hammock and guy lines:
I run one continuous line (look real close for the red 550 cord) starting at one eye bolt, around a doubled set of tie out stakes (same ones I use for tarp and side tie outs on HH), back to the other eye bolt with one round turn around the upright then back through the eye, around the opposite side tie out stakes and back to the original eye bolt. Both ends are secured to the eye bolt each with a taught line hitch. The taught line hitch allows for independent tightening of each side. The stand doesn’t wobble much with my son on board, but I the guy lines take up no extra footprint and I sleep a little better at night with them installed.

    Was it worth the effort:
    You tell me…

The program the Boys picked for summer camp ’09 has clear cut troop grounds. Looks like our troop will have a least 4 hammock hangers.
