DIY winter hammock and tarp finished

    Hi all,

New winter coming up, so I took some time to make a new tarp with doors and a hammock with integrated underquilt.
Tarp design is from www.diygearsupply.com and the hammock is my own design.

Tested it last week, in a big windy storm and +1 celcius / 33.8 fahrenheit temperatures, and i was very comfortable warm and no draft at all.

If you don't want to watch me mumbling and play around with the thread injector, then skip to 19.00 minutes where the end result is shown.

Very nice! I think that set up will give you years of good service. You are very precise and methodical in how you made your gear. The country-side or view where you were camping could very well have been southern Indiana or Ohio or a dozen other states in the US. Not so different. Thanks for sharing.

Very good workmanship . You said you had another insulated hammock with shorter quilt I believe . How cold do you calculate your new hammock will tolerate . Do you augment the bottom insulation with blankets etc ?
Thanks for all the detail . I am trying to build a winter hammock good to -10 Fahrenheit .
Just guessing I think I need four or five inches of loft . What do you think ?

    Thanks all
@ Wkerber, I guess I'm lucky with the country side here in middle europe.
Only thing not closeby (as in a few hours drive) is a desert area.

@ riverjoe, with the previous one, and using a 3 season sleeping bag to sleep in (comf -1 celcius or 30 fahrenheit, and extrem 17.1 celcius or 1.2 fahrenheit) and another very old 3 season sleeping bag (comf -2 c or 28 f, and extrem -7 c or 19 f) around the hammock as a cocoon, i had a very long comfortable weekend where temps dropped down to -26 c or -14.8 f during the night.
The loft on the new one is same thickness, but now also owning a wintersleeping bag, i hope to be able to just be fine in same temps but with only that wintersleeping bag as a cocoon.
Your loft question, i honestly have no clue, i never worked with down materials before, it's not that easy to get here sadly enough.....

Thanks Dabberty . Im trying to make the hammock itself the primary insulator and then just a top quilt to finish it off . I was thinking 4 or 5 inches of loft possibley with synthetic , but have not calculated weight yet , which is my problem now with my down and feather gear .

    that turned out great!
My supplies are on their way to make my father and me the same tarp. Any tips, tricks, problems, etc you ran into while doing the tarp? Did you go by DIYGS exactly or change some things around?

Dabberty, that's very nice. How much extra length did you allow for the bottom layer, and how many pleats did you put on each side to compensate for it? Also, did you allow extra width as well? It's great to see people experimenting with new ways to insulate hammocks.
