Fabric of underquilt

Am I safe to use 1.1 oz ripstop (not calendared) on the inner shell of a down UQ? Also, I was planning on using it for the baffles too but notice that everybody seems to use noseeum for it. I would like to use what I've got and I only have enough calendared ripstop for the outside shell of the UQ.

The calendared fabric is used to keep the down from spilling out.

The use of non-calendared fabric isn't really "downproof" enough for use when stuffing and taking it out for hanging repeatedly.

The use of noseeum material is used for same purpose, but in reverse. It will allow the air to move throughout the quilt while stuffing and unstuffing it and mostly keeping the down in the baffles where you need it.

+1 to Floridahangers comments. You want the down to stay in the quilt, the calandered fabric is what you want for all of it.

I agree that you do want to use calendared fabric with down.

However, I will add that when I cannibalized a high-quality old Holubar sleeping bag, its inner baffles were fabric, which surprised me.

Another note is that a DWR treatment on the outer shell of the underquilt will make it less susceptible to splashback and mildly blowing rain. The inner does not need this, if it affects your design at all.

That actually makes a lot of sense from a materials-cost standpoint. On the other hand, fabric baffles are often heavier than noseeum netting (most noseeum is 0.9 oz/sq yd). Buuuut...if you were to use M50 or NoBul1 as the baffles, you could come in 0.03 oz/sq yd less than the lightest noseeum I'm aware of (0.67 oz/sq yd for each of 'em; 0.7 oz/sq yd for ThruHiker's Nanoseeum).
