Ideal hammock strap length for redwood trees in the Sierra Nevadas?

What's the ideal strap length for redwood trees in the Sierra Nevadas... Yosemite region (though I imagine it's all the same).

I think I'm going to upgrade my WBB to whoopies so I also need to purchase the straps.

Part of what prompts this upgrade is that the existing straps are just too short.

Maybe pm fronkey and ask him what size he used a few weeks ago in that area.

Actually... this is a pretty easy answer.

I imagine a 6' wide tree is the maximum sized tree I will have to deal with.

    so 6 * pi = about 19 feet.

... now how much strap will I need from the tree to the whoopie? About 5 feet?

So that means I need a 24' strap?

    Does that sound right?

You only need enough strap to tie a MSH, not 5'

That's true.. and the whoopie slings are 6'... hm.

I could always get the 25' ones and maybe trim them if they're insane.

I think that I read in another thread that Dutch just picked up an order of 9 miles of strap. You should contact him before he starts to cut it up!

I hung in Yosemite last year. There are no small trees. I would take a several straps. Like four 10 or 12 foot straps with loops on both ends. That way you can larks head them together.

I carried 10ft tree straps and had 6' whoopee slings and didn't have any trouble hanging my hammock. Below is a photo of our hammocks by Half Dome and you can see the difference in tree sizes there. You should be good to go with 10 footers.

man now I'm wishing I didn't cut up one of my cargo slings! I still have one that's basically a continuous loop of 1 1/2-3/4 ish width military cargo slings; its roughly 16 feet when flattened out into a flat loop... so a little over 34 feet total...

yeah it's HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY but its wide, and sturdy (the military used this for carrying upwards of two tons under their helicopters...) just wrap it around a redwood tree and larkshead it, then connect your hammock to the end of the loop...

you could in theory use one of these to connect two to three hammocks.....in a radial pattern...
