Underground Quilts Zeppelin vs Hammock Gear Phoenix

    Howdy,

I'm on the hunt for a 20° 3/4 length down underquilt. I've narrowed it down to either a Underground Quilts Zeppelin 20° or a Hammock Gear Phoenix 20°, ideally with multicam outer shell. Did a search but couldn't find any direct comparisons between these two very similar underquilts.

    Here are the specs:

    • Fill Weight: 10 oz

    • Inner Shell: illume15 DWR shell

    • Length: 55"

    • Width: 47"

    • Additional: Draft collars, full channel suspension, removable secondary suspension?, s-biner attachments, 14-18 secondary connection points?, foot/head draw cords, Sil-Nylon stuff sack.

Hammock Gear Phoenix 20° 3/4 Length
    • Fill Type: 850 fill premium water resistant goose down (Activ Dry same as HyperDRY?)

    • Fill Weight: 10 oz (8 oz standard + 2 oz overfill)

    • Inner Shell: ARGON black

    • Outer Shell: Epsilon Multicam

    • Length: 52"

    • Width: 45"

    • Coverage: 2340 sq. in.

    • Loft: ?

    • Chambers: 9

    • Total Weight: 19.59 oz (16 oz + 2 oz overfill + 1.59 oz MultiCam)

    • Price: $242.00

    • Shipping: $10.00

    • Total Price: $252.00 (¢10.7 per sq. in.)

    • Additional: Draft collars, full channel suspension, secondary suspension, color coded quilt hangers, head/foot end channel draw cords, stuff sack.

To me, it appears that the Phoenix is the better choice.

Is there really anything that makes the Zeppelin worth the additional $32.90 besides the slightly larger size and greater number of baffles?

Is the Phoenix missing anything that the Zeppelin has? Does the Phoenix also have draft collars, full channel suspension, s-biner attachments, 14-18 secondary connection points, foot/head draw cords, and removable secondary suspension? I don't know what "secondary connection points" and "removable secondary suspension" even are.

Are there any real differences in the fabrics or goose down used? It seems they are both using Epsilon Multicam.

I appreciate any comments and suggestions!

IMO the hyperdry goose down (google it), extra few inches of coverage (always welcome on cold nights) plus the exceptional customer service of UGQ make the Zeppelin my winner.

Do you know what kind of down Hammock Gear uses and is there really such a major difference between the two?

I searched for HyperDry, but there's little info besides from the manufacturer and UGQ.

HG uses activ Dry goose down. I think it is the same process from two different down suppliers. You can't make a bad choice here.

You have done the research both are good products, it is difficult for someone else to make the choice for you. Kind of like someone making a choice for your life partner, you need to make the final choice.

    Thanks for the info Dutch!

Not asking for a choice, just opinions and some additional info. I am sure I can't make a bad choice with these. There's just a few of the minor details I can't compare directly based on the info on their websites. I like to be thorough, these are not cheap items after all.

Interesting that this is a topic today. I ordered an Incubator from Hammock Gear just this morning. I thought about a Zeppelin but leaned toward the HG. I called and talked to a real nice guy who said he would me get the underquilt most ricky tick as I'm in a bind time wise. Icould not have asked for better service. Had they not answered the phone I would have called UGQ for a Zeppelin.

Yes, HG quilts have draft collars, full channel suspension, secondary suspension, head/foot end channel draw cords. Technically you could take the secondary suspension off of the Phoenix (though to really remove it you'd have to cut off the line locs).

I'm in the same boat, since I'm comparing the full length 0˚ Zeppelin/0˚ Incubator. UGQ is slightly larger, but also slightly heavier, and a little more expensive. Both use materials that are equal in their high quality.

Currently all my quilts are HG … kinda want to expand my horizons just to see what else is out there, and spread the love. Either way, there is no wrong choice here.

The phoenix has color coded quilt hangers instead of S-biners. All HG UQs have draft collars standard and the 2 piece suspension. The two piece suspension has one set going through the side channel that makes one big loop. And then a second suspension that pulls out from the corners.

I hesitate to state the above because these are both top notch suppliers making really solid products. I am just trying to fill in the blanks.

    Thanks silentorpheus!

It seems that Underground Quilts shipping charges are steep for just an underquilt which skews the value a little bit as well, at least compared to Hammock Gear.
