I was also looking for a way to carry something to fish with while out and about and grew up with a cane pole in hand. Tenkara looked interesting but well beyond my limited fixed income so I started looking around and believe I've found a pole that will give me a taste of the experience.

I've caught fish on it but nothing large yet. The pole and my little tackle box total 10.8 oz. so will be going with me. Hope to put it to use this weekend on the Sherpa Hang.

Buy a couple of Kebari flies and no one will ever know it's not the real deal.

So here is what I have done and what I am going to try to do.

First, I did buy the cheap, under $6 rod from Amazon to experiment with. I already paid for it, so I might as well play with it some.

However, my main plan is use some of the advice I have received on here and learn to use my existing gear.

So, I am going to buy some flies, some of those clear floats that can be fillled with water, and some lighter line.

My decision for this is that my current system, which packs down small, is still able to catch larger fish such as smaller-medium pike and bass. So I hope to become flexible enough for both styles, lakes and streams. A few hikes I hope to go on soon will have both streams and a lake involved.

I have seen some television shows like Ultimate Survival Alsaska as well as YouTube videos where people have caught some pretty nice fish just hand-line fishing or tying line onto the end of a long stick. So I know it can be done, I am just not ready to go that primative yet.

Thanks for the advice and tips everyone!

Fishing & Hammocks were made for eachother

Backcountry- I usual only bring a handline. Trout don't get very big in the alpine lakes I fish. I have been known to take a packraft if I know I will be spending a lot time on the water.

I would still like to figure out a way to fish in the creeks and streams with my current spinning set up as there are a few trips I would like to do where I will possibly fish in lakes as well.
Have you tried the bubble casting float or possibly a float to cast a fly?

AJ McClane (fishing writer) had an idea of getting a small piece of fly line (about the length of pole), and add a fly fishing leader and use it with a cane pole. Roughly speaking, that's what tenkara is, from what I can tell. Don't really see how tenkara can be that much lighter than fly fishing, but I can understand how it would be easier to set up.

Tenkara rod 2 ounces, everything else maybe 5 ounces.(this is with fairly expensive gear) Total: 7 ounces try that with any other system with a rod. However, I do love my fly rod and take it with me frequently as possible.

Its funny...I got into hiking/backpacking about 2-3 years ago, and one of the things I started looking for was a decent rod to take with me backpacking.

Did some research, and found reference to a "Swede Stainless Stik". I'd bought one years and years ago for my kids...had it down in the basement. Reel is trash, but once that was replaced it's an awesome little stainless rod that rides right outside of my pack.

Kills me to see something I once bought at Walmart selling on Ebay for $100+.

But if you find one for a decent price somewhere, they're really worth it. You can throw heavy duty line on it, and there's nothing breaking your rod.
