    Fish'n and Hang'n

I am fairly new at this backpacking stuff. Only a few years and not too many trips.

One thing I have found though, is that I really enjoy is fishing on my adventures.

I actually planned a few hangs around the ability to fish in the area I was going to.

Right now, my fishing kit has it's own small shoulder strap type bag/pack. I am working on hopefully creating a system that will go inside my regular pack.

I use a collapible rod, small spinning reel, and a small accessory kit with a few lures, hooks, etc.

My goal this year is to learn how to fish in streams and areas of rivers with my current set up. Basically, some way to fly fish without a fly rod and reel.

So I was hoping to see if any of you have any tips, tricks, or advice.

    fishing

I love to fish and hang. I started using tenkara about 3.5 years ago and haven't looked back. I will have multiple fish in before others can have there rods set up. Fact I will fish without even taking my pack off most of the time and hit pockets as we walk.

Tenkara is great for for backpacking, because Its simple and light. Now I love all kinds of fishing, but for backpacking tenkara is king. Get yourself a Tenkara rod, line and some flies and your good to go. I just placed a custom order with zimmerbuilt for a new pouch for my kit. A lightweight Tenkara rod, morell fly box, scissors on my swiss army knife, pouch, extra line, and tippet only weights ~ 10 ounces give or take. Another good thing about Tenkara is you can set up fast fish a spot for 10 minutes and keep moving. With a trad. Setup those ten minutes would be spent just setting up!

Disclaimer: do not buy this to test if you like Tenkara, as you will be disappointed, but here is a cheap, lightweight alternative to a Cane pole if thats you style

Thanks for the info on the Tenkara. I think I will look into trying it. I will probably first start with a cheap version to see how I like it as I have never fly fished.

I would still like to figure out a way to fish in the creeks and streams with my current spinning set up as there are a few trips I would like to do where I will possibly fish in lakes as well.

Well, you guys just would not stop talking about fishing, would you? I just placed an order for a Tenkara kit.

    Thanks for tempting me.

Sounds like you need to buy a couple of Muddler Minnows for your fly box

Over the last 4/5 years I've perfected a pocket sized ultralight fishing kit that's light enough for me to carry in my pack even if I sometimes don't use it. (Not many items in my pack get a free ride)

There's no rod, just a hand line and it all fits in side a plastic chewing gum pot. I can use it to present flies, lures and spinners or bait beneath a float or or on the bottom.

Many people don't find it interesting because it isn't shiny and it doesn't cost much but it works for me. It has caught plenty of fish.

I can't usually be bothered with photos but if you think you are genuinely interested I could make an exception. (I won't be offended if you aren't)
