    Hello from Florida

Found this forum while looking for suggestions for DIY hammock stands. I'm going to visit friends who don't use a hammock (!) and have no place for me to hang mine -- cotton Yucatan style, no spreaders. I have it on hooks at home but would like to make an easily transportable frame for visiting. Since I started looking, the friend's husband says he'll put hooks in their concrete columns for me, so now there are two questions. The first one is still the portable frame and the second is how to determine the height of the hooks. My hammock is about 14' long and has to be chair height with my weight in it to accommodate knee replacements. I'll experiment with a rope later but if anyone has suggestions, please post. BTW, I just might take a portable frame with me on a kayak camping trip.

Welcome from Kissimmee! Not sure about how high hooks need to be for a 14' hammock. But as for portable hammock stands, be sure to do a search on the forum for Turtledog stand. One of our Florida members, Olddog, made some modifications to a stand that another one of our members, Turtlelady, came up with, and viola, the Turtledog stand was born.

Welcome aboard from Lakeland. Here are the links to the Turtlelady and the Turtledog stands. A lot of reading but interesting view of how an idea on the forum can take wings and grow with the input of others.

For use with a 14' hammock you would need to go with a longer toprail and could gain more height with longer legs.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Welcome to the elevated fun in the Florida sun, from the East Coast.

The TD, turtledog stand may be what you want due to the length of your hammock. You can make it quite high and extend the length to customize.

Come out to our group hangs for our "suspended support group". There is a group hang near Frostproof off of US27. It's north of Lake Okeechobee. It's Feb 21-23, in less than 2 weeks.
