New type of bugnet material - Bayer Lifenet

Unlike most of the US citizenry, our corporations do believe in global climate change and are looking for ways to adapt/profit. Bayer has come out with a polypropylene bugnet that supposedly maintains its insecticidal capabilities for up to 35 washings (five years).

    http://www.vectorcontrol.bayer.com/b...ochure_New.pdf

Their market clearly isn't UL backpackers - they're trying to combat malaria. This is what they call a long-lasting insecticide-treated net (LLIN). Still, I wondered how this compares to noseeum (.91 oz per square yard) and nanoseeum (.70 oz per square yard). I'm assuming both are polyester (75 or 100 denier multifilament yarn), but maybe some of the heavier nets out there are polyethylene (100 to 200 denier monofilament yarn).

They say it's 40 g/m², which I translate as 1.4 oz/1.09 square yards. Their primary goal is durability, tear resistance and long-lasting bug protection through multiple washings. Sounds interesting!

Sorry for the ignorance, but what exactly is the environmental friendly aspect to this net? The insecticides last longer? Polypropylene is a greener product than polyester?

I think its in its application...people like Bill Gates have supplied people in the rain forest and others in 3rd would countries with mosquito nets in the past who would otherwise contracted horrible nasties without them.
or ....I think he just meant Big business will profit due to climate change bringing on more of the bugs thus selling more bug nets.
    I think.

The bugnet is expected to last five years and 35 washings, and is more sturdy than polyester or polyethylene. So from that aspect, it is a more environmentally friendly product because it won't enter the garbage stream as soon.

And if you think of the environment, well, humans are part of that environment so the less people with malaria and blood-borne diseases, the better for your environment.

The downside is that polypropylene degrades more under UV exposure than polyester or polyethylene, but hopefully Bill Gates is giving out tarps to our malaria-threatened breathren to mitigate the effects!

Also, localizing the insecticide means less need for wide area spraying, which is a good thing. Every little bit helps, wonder when it will hit the consumer market?
