it can be annoying.
i was sobo and got to the last shelter in Maine. some nobo's heard i had a hammock and started yelling " over here, the hammockers are over here." "the cool hikers are over here" and other stuff. they made such a scene the hikers i was with joked about it for the next 200 miles.
the big question from my friends was "what is the big deal? and why should we care?
when hiking i never mention i hammock. i just set up and go to sleep.

My answer to OP:
Because hammock talk = technical talk. Let's admit we're mostly gearheads here.
If someone comes up with a WhoopieSheet or Cuben pillow case, I bet there will be someone to start a forum on beds.
Heck, I might even be one of those "hangers" that will become a "flat-layer".
I remember having that discussion with Angrysparrow on a hike one time, as well as a hanging buddy from Ashville(SP?), NC who never did join this forum. I have never discussed my bed or recliner with any one. I might have on rare occasions backyard tested ground equipment, but I don't ever remember setting up the tent and mattress in the backyard for an afternoon nap or read. Or taking those things with me on day hikes just for the pleasure of hanging during breaks. But, I do both those things all of the time with a hammock.
