    Stone Mountian

Taking my daughter for an overnight to Stone Mountain Park in NC. Going to the "primative campsites" I am thinking about coming in from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Anything that is good to know before you go?

Ashman. Is that the Stone Mountain on the AT? If you think of it could you get me a couple pictures of the trail head and the parking area, and the primitive camping if it is along the AT. I would greatly appreciate it.

You might wanna come in from the Stone Mountain park side. I just did this one from the park side. I asked about the Mountain to Sea trail that goes up to the parkway. Heard due to excessive ran and little use it is "a little overgrown". But it didn't look like it when I passed the turn off for that trail. Also, if you want to register to camp(you might wanna) the sign in is on the Stone Mt side as well. Bring exact change..$9.00. If you do come in from the parkway, let me know how it was if ya could. I might attempt it anyway myself. Hope this helps a little. Water is plentiful. I would aim for sites A or F. They are the best. Check this thread out.

oh yeah, if in the area don't miss the Stone Mt loop trail. (day use only) 4.5 miles. Awesome views, 200ft waterfall, historic homesite. Another reason to come in through the park. But seriously if you come in from the parkway lets us know how it was

It was a good hike but a tough one. From the Skyline dirve it is about 5- 5.5 miles to the campsites. There is no way to pay for the sites from the Skyline side, so that was a good lesson learned. The hike is very steep the last two miles almost all downhill going in and all up hill coming out. The reroute is okay. The trail is well marked and is easy on the feet. After the first mile in there is plenty of water. I'll try to get some pictures up when I get a chance.

Anyone know how much elevation difference there is from Devil's Garden Overlook and the campground?

Don't know about the trail in from the Parkway, but I can tell you that site E is okay but small and right on the trail to backcountry sites, site F is very nice (I recommend it) - it's in the cul-de-sac of that trail, site A is pretty good too but not very private - with a nice waterfall to play in nearby. The others get increasingly higher up and away from the water, with nothing much to recommend them, imo.

I'd definitely recommend hanging your food as well -- AG and I were visited by a bear during night #2 recently (snorted at me in the dark and left tracks in the mud that I found later. I didn't see a thing in the dark).

Hth and regards, give me a shout sometime if you're out and about...

Sorry, it looks like you've already been? Hope you had a good trip if so.
