    That's an interesting idea. I should say that the 12.5' hammock only weighs 18.4 ounces. You may be able to have two rods at the ends which the hammock can hang off of, but I'm not sure if the weight you'd save would be more than the new suspension you'd have to build.

    Great eye-opener, thanks GregB.

    Some questions from a newbie;
    I am about 6.5 ft., do you think that your longest hammock could be narrowed down, including modding with foot and shoulder extensions like the video of Mad777? Or would that introduce calflines with extended length?
    What kind of tarp are you using since the diagonal seems to become wider. Would some kind of smaller sized 4-season tarp be possible?

    I think you have given me a good start.

    Look at the Exped hammocks.
    I think that was what they were shooting for with lots of string inplace of material.

    I think you may just be fine with the 12 1/2' as it is. I have a bit of loose fabric at my head and feet already. However, a head box/foot box would certainly help (although I haven't built one like that yet).

    My tarp is a Black Cat Tarp which is 12' long at the ridge line and 10 ' wide. Remember, my ridge line is 116" which is about 9.5 feet. So I have a total of 2 1/2 feet of overhang from my tarp to my hammock (A bit more than a foot on each end). I'm thinking of building doors to close up one end of the hammock in case one end is pointing slightly more into the wind. That should take care of any wind/rain issues.

    Thanks for your reply, GregB. Appreciate the link for the Black Cat Tarp. (Nice work Blackbishop351)

    Thanks for the great video. I have made an 11 foot hammock which I really found to be more comfortable. I think I will not shorten my 4 yards on my next DIY hammock and see how it works for me.

    Great info.

    I'm pretty late to this thread. I made 10' and 11' hammocks, which I've not hung simultaneously (dunno why, as I have two great hang sites right in my front patio). You confirmed my unscientific impressions re: length vs. comfort. Thanks!

    I have 12' left of ripstop, and I know now what to do with it.

    Now, about the 10' hammock, what to do, what to do? Maybe convert it to a bridge hammock?

    Remember, hammocks make great gifts to friends and family... find someone short?

    AHHHH, yes. but how short?

    Maybe extend the hammock and then gift it??? Would a triple stitched rolled seam be almost as strong as the fabric?

    nah.. I'm 6'2" and have a 10' hammock that works fairly well. I've tried a rolled 1" hem with triple stitching to splice some pieces... it works but I'd never trust it enough to risk someone else's butt.
