    Cheap DIY Tarp

Well I have a trip coming up in a few weeks and I didn't have a good tarp solution nor do I have the funds to get one so i made this with the materials I had on hand. It is Visqueen while not ideal or light weight I think it will provide decent selter for one night hell even if I throw it away after one night I will be happy. it took 30 Minutes to make. but this isn't for the gram nazi's

    1. I cut the visqueen to 10x10 ( it is a 10 foot wide roll so one cut )
    2. I folded the corner and cut a small hole in the fold.
    3. used a broken pencil as a toggle in the fold of the tarp and ran mason line through the hole and tied it to the pencil.
    4. Duct taped it up.
    5. rigged some auto tensioners with some shock cord I had laying around
6 Made a bag out of some left over sheers I had from a snake skins project.

Total Weight : 3 pounds 4 Ounces which is lighter than a cheap blue walmart tarp.

I tested it pretty good on a small piece. I taped the corners the same way as I did on the tarp, and pulled with one hand while hold down with the other hand and my fingers holding it down started to stretch into the tarp on the ground. so it is solid

Looks darn good. I once helped a friend build a sailboat from Popular Mechanics plans. We used "visqueen" for the sail and it held up really well. Besides, plenty of AT thru-hikers used the stuff in the old days.

P.S. You might not realize, but some might consider "ghetto tarp" to be a racist term. Decide for yourself, of course.

Very clever ... hope you share the results of it's actual use. Looks like it should just do the job.
