I use a larkshead with large O rings and it works great. FishinFinn's idea. I actually then have figure 9's with the biners attached to those. It is slick and takes the slack out nicely.

A quick check shows 5 to 6 inches of slack in the line.
Thanks for all the input!

Hi and welcome to the group. FWIW I like your signature!
I liked the way headchange4u made his own tarp tensioners like this:

I copied his and have been pleased. I attached the small figure 9's to my stakes, tho, and it works really well. In the stake bag there is no risk of ripping the tarp, which there is if they are attached to the tarp in some fashion. Plus, it's easier to pull the stakes out when breaking camp!

Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? That would have been so much easier than whipping surgical tubing...

OMG... I thought I was going to lose my mind whipping that tubing. After all that finger-breaking work my knots kept slipping through.
I have the O-rings on my HH Hex tarp and my CCS tarp, and the Just Jeff tensioners on my OES and my Clark tarp. Those Just Jeff tensioners are a killer to make, but work great. The O-Rings are so simple, and require no work at all. To me, it's a toss-up.
I've seen HC4u's tensioners in action as well on several peoples rigs, and they are simple and effective as well. I like the o-rings, because they don't tangle, are cheap as heck, and easy to replace/find replacements.
I've made several of the surgical tubing tensioners; I feel ya'lls pain. I love the shockcord tensioners and doubt I'll ever go back to tubing again. The shockcord tensioners are very, very, very easy to make; just a couple of simple knots. They weigh almost nothing and are very effective. They also don't freeze nearly as easily. Tubing is sooo 2005.
Trust nobody!
