    Is this smart?

I read somewhere within HF about using 5 wraps through a descender ring instead of using knots as an alternative part of a suspension system. I didn't like the idea of having to manually push the running-end of a suspension line through a ring for 5-loops, two times over (for each end of the hammock). So I thought maybe a carabiner could speed it up. The line is Amsteel Blue. And yes, this supported my weight with no slip for a quick test hang. I have not overnighted with it. My question is, Is this a smart attachment? My initial concern would be the possibility of twisting forces on the carabiner. Is there any other concerns?

I would not worry about the biner. I use it a little differently as pictured below. Three wraps works for me and I can just pull the biner either way for a quick adjustment when it is not loaded. Plus if it does slip (never has) the rope and biner will just tighten up on the tree hugger. If your knot (half hitch?) comes loose the rope is coming all the way out.

My concern isn't so much about the carabiner attachment--it's similar in function to a Bachmann hitch--as about the line you've chosen. Amsteel Blue is a Dyneema fiber that's generally considered pretty slippery, and I don't know how the carabiner wraps will work with that. I've only used that kind of technique with nylon kernmantle line.

I would imagine that your half hitch backup will take a fair amount of load.

You could do an experiment--take your Amsteel blue line, then tie an alpine butterfly in the middle of it to get a biggish loop to work with. Set the hammock so it's almost where you want it using the main rope, then use the butterfly loop and carabiner as a separate tie-off to cinch it up tight. That way, if it slips, you won't go very far before the alpine butterfly tie-off catches you.

    Neat idea!

My concern would be the line cutting into the tree.

The line is connected to a length of 1" wide webbing at the tree. I agree with your concern, that would not be in keeping with responsible hammocking.
