DIY underquilt kit from Thru Hiker???

I am sure that this has been discussed but after searching I cant find a thread on it.

I noticed that Thru Hiker has DIY UQ kits with climashield 5oz for $80.

If there is a thread discussing these can someone please link it in a reply. If not I am curious to hear someone's input on these.

In addition is there a way to determine a estimated temp range that UQ would cover?

I'm still curious about the actual kit if anyone has given it a try.

From their description, these are bundled materials for quilts with no plans. It does not say UQ so I'm assuming the intent is for a ground sleeper's top quilt. There may or may not be appropriate amounts of materials to make an UQ.

    DIY Apex UQ

I'm new to the whole hammocking and DIY scene, but I recently made my own TQ and UQ using Climashield 5.0 Apex from thruhiker.com. The $80 quilt kit I'm assuming you are referencing is the one I used to make myself and my girlfriend each a TQ. It turned out great! Maybe I'll post pictures and info on here soon...

My underquilt is also made from 5.0 Apex from thruhiker, but the fabric on it is Impetus 1.0 from DIYgearsupply.com. For this project I only ordered one linear yard of Apex, which the good people at thruhiker interpreted as a 48" x 60" sheet! Based on my comparison with cottage companies, I'm assuming these quilts should have a 35 degree temperature rating. I'll be trying them out for the first time this weekend.

    Hope this helped

Good point I guess I need to determine the exact dimensions of the UQ we need and then confirm that there will be enough material I would assume based on their description that the Climashield will be 60" (5') x 2.5 yards (7' 6") considering both of us are shorter than 5'10" that would be plenty of insulation in each kit. The material may be a different story.

I am looking to build us 2 UQ we have 2 north face 20º bags that we could use for TQ until I can build those. Were just getting started in hammocks, have plenty of ground gear just not the funds to go buy double of everything to get started. I would be interested to hear how your test runs go in the 5.0 UQ...

A while ago I did a study of down vs CS Apex. I used generally accept temp vs loft values for the down, and correlated that to a temp VS CLO values from the EN rating system (which is considered conservative). I used a 30*F rating as my base line, which corresponds to a CLO of 6.

Base on that I found that LOFT of CS Apex vs LOFT of down to be comparable - aka 1.5" of down and 1.5" of CS apex both keep you warm at 40*F.

    So 5oz CS Apex is 1.2" which is equal to 50*F. 6.3oz is 40*F. 7.5oz is 30*F. 10.9oz is 20*F. 12.5oz is 0*F.

again, this is based on EN rating, so YMMV.

    5.0 oz Apex underquilt

Well to be honest it was a tent camping weekend at heart. We got to test out our new Thermarest Neoair xlite pads and DIY TQs; both of which were incredibly warm and comfortable down to the mid 30s. I brought along my hammock and DIY UQ as a camp chair. The UQ packed small, set up easily and snug against the hammock, and provided plenty of insulation for a midday nap around 50 degrees. It was also quite comfortable in camp down to around 40, though we spent most of the night either sitting by the fire or sleeping in the tent.

I'll be sure to post when I get a true test in with the full system.
