unknown coated fabric from walmart, please help identify

Ok well at one of the local walmarts today and happened to see some ripstop looking stuff in their bargain center at 1.5 per yard. I then came across this other stuff. It has a very slick coating on one side that almost seems bonded to it. As you can see in the picture it actually overhangs the fabric by a bit.

Any thought as to what it is? The coating is very stretchy and has a silicone like feel to it, but it is also pretty thick. I am as of yet unsure what to do with it but for the buck a yard I took all 8 yards that was there.

This is the ripstop I grabbed.

    This is the other stuff

So anyway I would appreciate any help I can get with identifying this material and maybe it's actual intended use.

    Looks like poly laminated ripstop.

    Ways to go about this:

Weigh a sample and do the math to find out weight/sq yd.

Do the water test: either make a gathered balloon out of it and squeeze or place it over the top of a jug or jar and invert the jug or jar. If you get water through it, it ain't waterproof.

Use the burn method to determine what kind of base fabric it is:

From your images, it looks like a PU-coated fabric of some kind. Exactly what kind, I have no idea; could be polyester, could be nylon, could be something more exotic.

    Hope it helps!

Thanks for the input guys. It is definitely a wee bit o the heavy side. That chart is awesome.

I have no doubt it is water proof. The coating is actually a bit thick, maybe .002 inches. I don't know about doing the burn test as I will have to take the coating into consideration also. I think it will make a most excellent tarp material, even if a bit on the heavy side, and I think I got like 8 yards or so. I don't know I may make a dip bag for the water filtering system.(large bag to dip into pond or swamp).

No matter what it is it proves one thing, walmart has a bit of everything.
