New to using a hammock

Hey everyone!

So i've always used a tent for camping/outdoors but a recent invite to a medical mission trip is requiring me to purchase a hammock. That being said it has kind of sparked my interest in doing more hammock camping and what not. So being a college student as well, I was looking for something that is of decent quality for a decent price. The only requirement is that the hammock has a bug net (prefer built in since from my own personal research getting the 2 separately can be more costly and add more weight).

I kind of like the grand trunk tbh. I was hoping to get something that I can use more than once so i didn't really want to get anything THAT cheap. Anyways I was hoping to hear what everyone thinks? Also do you recommend the cables that are used to hang it up with? I'm unfamiliar with the terms (i think it's called the suspension). I keep hearing everyone talking about whoopie slings because they are lighter etc. Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

First and foremost - Welcome to the forum. Take a look around and read up, you'll most likely find the answers to your questions. With that in mind there are other choices available to you. It's best to know what your budget is for a hammock. based on the three listed, I would have to guess you don't want to spend more than $100. With that in mind there are a couple of other choices:

All fine hammocks and used by many of the forum members here. In the end though it's going to come down to what you want to spend and what you want to carry weight wise.

I'm not sure a separate hammock adds more weight. I have a net from Papa Smurf that weighs 3 ops. I like that it covers the bottom too. I have been bitten through the bottom of my Hennessy. If I use it in buggy areas, I'll bring along my undercover.

Second..Where will you be going ?
How tall are you and how much to you weight ?

If you are going to a buggy area then I would recommend a double layer hammock either a BlackBird or PapaSmurf RoamingGnome. Double layer makes it harder for a skeeter to bite thru.

Unless you are short the Proforce hammock will a bit short for you.

That first Byer hammock you posted may fall apart soon after you purchase it. A better one from them, and at a great price tag, is this one:

Unlike the others it has integrated spreader poles to spread the bugnetting out and suspends it using only one line. The retail price is $55, which is going to save you some bucks compared to your other options. It's also constructed much better than the original Moskito hammock...if you get that other Byer hammock you're going to learn to hate those strings; they'll turn into an impossible tangle and you'll spend more time messing with those cords than you will actually sleeping in the thing! The Kakoon has solved the problems the original Moskito had, while keeping the retail price down for those on a budget.
