    Hanging a hammock without trees

I was following some threads on the forum and one thing lead to another and I came across a couple of videos on you tube that talk about how to hang a hammock when trees are not available. Below is one of the links.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2W-YVl8EV8

There were a few more videos as well showing basically the same concept except with poles on both ends. Unfortunately I can't find those videos again to reference.

On the forum I read several post about Turtle lady and turtle dog stands. One of the short falls that everyone seems to be finding a solution for for those stand are to make them portable.

The concept used in the video seems to take care of this. I found a tent pole at the army navy store for less than $10 with a spike already in it and it can be raised and lowered. Using Amsteel instead of the cable and the two tent poles seem to solve the portability issue.

I am thinking of trying this method but want to check with other members on the forum if they have tried it and what I might be missing.

Does this concept work? What are the pitfalls? Am I missing something using this method.

It works if your poles are strong enough and your anchors hold.

Or one pole two tie downs...

Thanks Gmcttr for the links. I think this is very interesting and has great potential. I think I am going to give it a try.

I'm just now embarking on my first hammock-camping trip, and this looks like the most portable solution for hanging without trees that I've seen. Portability is a big deal, because I only have a kayak to car how did it work out for you? If so, do you have any tips or tricks for anchoring in sand or sandy soil? In my tests the stakes keep letting go...

    Thank you!
