    Asym tarp and UQP

Would an UQP make up for the weather protection that's sacrificed with an 11' Asym Tarp? Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm aiming for a lazy (and penny pincher) man's version of the HNO Dirigible. So my ideal DIY UQP would extend to cover the top of the hammock at the ends. And then I would use velcro or something to attach the Tarp to the sides of the UQP during heavy wind.

    Feedback?

You'd probably be better of with a full hammock sock , for added protection and to add a few degrees of warmth too.

Weight is a big deal for me, as well as pack volume. I just don't want to get wet.

FWIW...UQPs are normally DWR (water resistant) and breathable so you don't get condensation pooling in the bottom or trapped in the UQ. They are intended to protect the UQ from incidental blowing mist, ground splash and heat robbing wind.

Attaching the tarp to the UQP indicates a hard blowing rain can directly hit the UQP while water from the tarp will sheet down across the UQP. This means you need a waterproof UQP with the associated risk of condensation or a heavier waterproof breathable which may offset any weight and volume savings.

My fault for not being clear:
I was planning on attaching the UQP about 6 inches in from the edge of the tarp to avoid that (using bonding rather than stitching so seam sealing isn't a concern).

Yeah, I think it might be able to withstand strong winds better that way.

I think you'd be far better off with a severe hex cut tarp that you can set over the ridge line and anchor down close to the ground. I've added a single snap closure to each end of the one shown in the link and two additional bottom guy line tie outs on each side like a winter tarp to pull it down and tight and allow me to close the ends off like doors. Not much room inside, but it's dry. Tarp rigged is about 9 oz.
