    If you're hanging, you can push up the trail to areas that don't lend themselves so well to tenting and still be near the river. I hammocked there and was able to get away from crowds a couple of years ago without much trouble.

    Be sure to check out Natural Bridge State Park while you're up there. If you're pressed for time, take the chair lift up. It's a very impressive natural structure.

    I caught the Gorge, river, and state park all as part of the Sheltowee Trace in 2007. It was a really nice hike, despite some late May heat.

    The Sheltowee Trace runs from The Big South Fork through Cumberland falls, the Red River Gorge and on through the Morehead area. It basically runs the entire length of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Check out this site for more information on the Trace and some suggested hikes:

    I've been camping in the RRG for the past 20 years or so and have to agree that each year it gets harder and harder to find isolation out there. My friends and I are taking our boys on a section of the Sheltowee around Cumberland Falls at the end of the month. I'll post some info on that area when I get back.
