What type of whipping cord or line?

    Hi all,
I`m about to start my first DIY hammock and I am planning on whipping the ends. What type of cord or line do you normally use for that?. I was thinking some 1.9mm tech line but would some draw cord or paracord be better?

    Thank you for any imput

If you're asking about whipping the ends rather than gathering the ends with a cord in end channels, I think I've seen reports of people using just about every small cord out there.

It's more personal preference than anything else. I find that paracord works very well for me. I always use method #2 here and I don't cut the ends off so that it is easy to pull the "lock" back out if I want to change it.

I use paracord inner threads. I have a bunch of the stuff I won't use any other way for hammocking.

My favorite is a dynaglide dogbone.

I had been using method three and wondered why I couldn't get it out. This method turns your whipping into a rock and seems like it might, perhaps, be bad for the fabric? I do like that it's pretty much permanent though.

And, I like using para cord for hammocks.

I use a channel end whipping. It's not a structural channel so, I use mason's line for the whipping.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Using that method and leaving the ends on so it can be quickly undone, has encouraged me to freely experiment with gather patterns, pulling the corners, etc. over a 3 year span. During that time I have taken apart and re-whipped several hammocks made of a variety of materials and have not seen any damage.

Correction, I had been using method 1, with paracord (probably too long of a piece), and the tension created by it getting twisted, I think, made the whipping really tight.

    This is what I do.

    1. Sew a small channel on the short ends of hammock.

    2. Insert zip-tie and cinch down the tie, but not to much.

    3. take fixed eye of whoopie slings, feed through ziptie loop,

    4. larks head whoopie sling onto bundle on end.

    5. repeat on other side.

tips: you don't need the initial channel to be strong, it is NOT load bearing. this just creates a bundle on the end with the zip tie.

    I hope this helps,

Thanks for the replies. Great information

    Hey Dirtwheels,
is that a 85 Honda 350X in your avatar? I had an 86 when I was about 13 years old. I loved that thing, way to much power for me at the time but loved it.
