I am brand new to this forum and hammock camping. I am looking to purchase my first hammock for an 800 mile section hike of the AT this summer. Have no idea where to start.

I know this is all new to me - but, I learn quickly. I am 57, 6'0" and weigh 260. (losing weight on the trail is a goal!)

From initial hammock research priorities are:
    Lite weight
    Bug screen
Ease of set up take down (snake skins)
Rain tarp large enough to cook underneath
I currently have several sleeping bags including Sierra Designs Backcountry Bed Sleeping Bag
I have no idea how much hammocks cost

    Thanks for your help!

Hi Longrun, welcome. I'm a newbie too. I would recommend going to a "hang" close to you and asking group members if they would show you their gear. That way you can see what you like. That said, I'd check out butt in a sling hammocks and warbonnet. Also, My niece has a Hennessy ultralight system that she loves and plans to use in her AT through hike. Good luck!

From there if the temp goes well below freezing I will layer-up with clothing and maybe a hot water bottle as well.
How has this worked out for you, specifically using the SOL Escape Bivvy? Anyone else tried using one in their hammock?

I have one, but never thought about using it in the hammock so I'm curious how well it worked. How much additional clothing/insulation have you needed to use?

Great idea! I don't have much to add, but have purchased the cheap stuff and gradually worked my way up. I wish I would have just bit the bullet and bought the good stuff from the start.

$150 dollars total for an 11-foot long/7.5-foot wide hammock for flat diagonal lay. Including two Hex tarps rigged end to end. Keeping warm in a rectangular sleeping bag rated to 0-degrees F. Hammock is easy to hang, two small tarps rigged end to end are easy to set up, and pitch tight. If the weather is not rainy or snowy, a single tarp over the hammock, with the second tarp rigged for cooking under, or shade.

Simple and easy to lug around, and you will be warm.

Hello from SE GA. I purchased a Yukon Outfitters hammock with bug netting a while back from Woot. com, but never got around to using it. This past week, Woot had a Kelty Noah's Tarp 12 on sale for about half price, so I snagged that too. I have a cross country motorcycle trip coming up in late May, and we plan on doing some camping along the way. I decided I needed to try hammock camping before we got on the road, so I did my first hang Sat night. Went pretty well, but I did get cold. Night time temps were in the 50s. I was using my Marmot Pounder as my only form of insulation. It was not enough, even rated for 40 degrees. Decided to make some changes and try again Sunday night. Used my REI Lite core 1.5 pad, along with my Marmot zero degree bag as my underlayment, in conjunction with the Pounder as my top quilt. Worked great! Actually got too hot at one point. I'm learning a lot from reading these posts. My big question is, it seems to me that hammock camping can be quite bulky between the hammock, tarp, underquilt and top quilt. Not too bad of an issue for me for this upcoming trip since I'm pulling a trailer, but not sure is want to hike with it. Granted, I slept sooo much better in a hammock as compared to a tent. Felt great both Sunday and today, with no soreness. Definitely would have been stiff in a tent. I look forward to learning so much more from you all!
    Thanks,
    Bryant

I have been wrestling with bulk issues myself. I want to pack my gear with my bicycle. My bulkiest item is my sleeping bag, though, a 30* synthetic, which I would have with or without the hammock.

I've been experimenting with putting a skin around my hammock and sleep gear and compressing it all together in a dry bag, which is showing promise in my initial tests. When I compress everything individually then try to pack them, the pack ends up with odd sized lumps that are hard to manage. I used pantyhose initially, but ripped them after 2d use, so I am having some nylon sleeves made which I think will be better.
