sock ? , is this neccessary
    An AT hike?
I can't see needing a bivy sock on the AT with a March 1 start. Might be really nice on a couple of nights, but not worth carrying IMO. Especially if you end-up with the door option on your tarp.
A full sleeping bag is a bunch of extra weight you won't want. If you can get a quilt prior to your start, you'll be happier for it. A 3-season will get you thru with a little extra clothing at the start.

Best of luck! FYI, I have a doormat with your username on it.

    1st Setup:

    HH Expedition: $98.00 (new)
    Blue CCF Pad: $5.00
0deg Slumberjack synthetic bag: $75.00 (I think this was their first one ever... it's heavy and huge)

It's been all DIY from there, except for a summer sleeping bag.

I think it would be a good idea to maybe break up the groups into the typical weight limits on our hammocks, say under 300lbs, 300+. Since I am 5'10, I am not as in tune as to the height requirements Maybe an under 6', 6'+. Or would that meld just fine with the weight rating?

I am looking forward to adding my dream list to this as well.
Great idea here, for us hammock virgins, I'm looking for information on products that can be used for someone around 350 lbs and in conditions as low as -25 c.
I sleep on my side and wonder if the bridged system would give more shoulder room and ease of movement when switching sides through out the night.

I am handy with my head and hands and don't mind constructing this myself, wit a little help from my new friends. lol
Thanks again for any help anyone can provide.

    Thumbs up comparison debate.

To help answer that questions for any future newcomers, I'm issuing a challenge. The gloves are off. Consider yourself taunted.

The object of the challenge is to put together a hammock setup within a specific price range. Your system should include, at bare minimum, a hammock, a tarp, suspension, and some sort of insulation. Shoot for a 3 season temperature range, like 40*F and up. Assume that:

    1. Someone buying one of these setups already owns a sleeping bag for top insulation.

    2. Weight is not an issue

    3. Bug protection is optional.

    4. Accessories (guy line, biners, cinch buckles, rings, stakes, etc) are optional.

    5. No sewing and only minor modifications may be necessary.

Provide links if possible. You don't have to answer all of them but bonus points for those that do. I'm looking for:

The Ultimate Budget Setup: Under $50

    Hammock Setups Under $100

    Hammock Setups Under $200

    Hammock Setups Under $300

    Hammock Setups Under $400

Hammock Setups $400 and Up (or your dream system)

    I'll get things started:

The Ultimate Budget Setup: Under $50
(aka the Walmart Special. All these Items should be available at your local WM)

Super Cheap 8x10 tarp (example) $9
    Kalisto Hammock $19
    Walmart blue CCF pad $9
    Webbing from ratchet straps $10
    __________________________________________________ _______________

    Total: $47

    Hammock Setup Under $100

    Gear Guide 12x12 tarp $30
    Walmart blue CCF pad $9
    Kalisto Hammock $19
Webbing from ratchet straps for suspension. $8-10
    __________________________________________________ ________________

    Total: $77

    Hammock Setups Under $200

    Skeeter Beeter Pro $58
    Gear Guide 12x12 tarp $30
    Speer 4x4 SPE $45
    Walmart blue CCF pad X 2 $18
    Ratchet strap webbing $9
    __________________________________________________ _____________

    Total: $160

    OR

HH Expedition Asym (includes tarp, hammock, & suspension) $140
    Speer SPE 2x2 $35
    Walmart blue CCF pad x 2. $18
    __________________________________________________ ___________

Being a newbie to this means of wilderness hammock camping, I am wondering if there is a train of thought as to which system is better over all, or has an advantage over the other system in certain respects.
The two systems I know of so far are the gathered and the bridged.
Would it be asking too much for so open debate ,comments or random thoughts as to what the knowledgeable hammockers prefer for different conditions and why?
Thanks in advance for sharing your tried and tested wisdom.

    Regards Rockminder

You will never get a definitive answer to that question; too many variables. I'm a gathered-end guy, but sometimes enjoy a cinched-end rig. I've even spent some very nice nights in a bridge hammock. The weather consideration is heavily influenced by the supporting gear (tarps, pads, underquilts, socks, covers, etc.) one carries on any given outing. Which is often based on time spent and miles covered.

All the systems are infinitely flexible and imaginations run wild around here, so what works the 'best' one day is often times yesterday's news.
