    Arrow Newbie Hammock Setups.

I'm sure that browsing this forum for the first time can be confusing and overwhelming to the hammock noob. One of the most frequently asked questions by any new members here on Hammock Forums is, "I'm new to hammock camping. What is a good hammock/tarp/insulation system to start with?"

To help answer that questions for any future newcomers, I'm issuing a challenge. The gloves are off. Consider yourself taunted.

The object of the challenge is to put together a hammock setup within a specific price range. Your system should include, at bare minimum, a hammock, a tarp, suspension, and some sort of insulation. Shoot for a 3 season temperature range, like 40*F and up. Assume that:

    1. Someone buying one of these setups already owns a sleeping bag for top insulation.

    2. Weight is not an issue

    3. Bug protection is optional.

    4. Accessories (guy line, biners, cinch buckles, rings, stakes, etc) are optional.

    5. No sewing and only minor modifications may be necessary.

Provide links if possible. You don't have to answer all of them but bonus points for those that do. I'm looking for:

The Ultimate Budget Setup: Under $50

    Hammock Setups Under $100

    Hammock Setups Under $200

    Hammock Setups Under $300

This is a fantastic idea. I'll definitely be putting a spreadsheet together with my favorites of the set-up ideas we come up with.

I'll edit this post with my lists once I've put them together... it's taking me a while. These will ALL have bug nets, as where I live (Maine) it is absolutely a must. You could be bled dry in one night by the things...

    Super Cheap $50.00 Setup

Hammock: $25.00 Parrot Bay Key Largo Deluxe Camping Hammock
Suspension: $6.00 Polyester Webbing from Tie-Downs
    Tarp: $9.00 Texport Rip-Stop Polyethylene Tarp 8' x 10'
Insulation: $6.00 Blue CCF pad from most any Department Store (Walmart carries them)

    Total: $46.00

    Hammock Setups Under $100.00

Hammock: $25.00 Parrot Bay Key Largo Deluxe Camping Hammock
Suspension: $6.00 Polyester Webbing from Tie-Downs
Tarp: $30.00 Guide Gear 12x12 Tarp
    Insulation: $6.00 Blue CCF pad

    Total: $67.00

I agree... I would have saved the green had I just purchased the good stuff at the getgo!

Agreed. I've already got my eye on a few that I want for my first go round. I don't think I could go wrong with any of them.

Can I toss out the idea that we use a consistent set of columns. It would make a really cool spreadsheet. I also would like to add another criteria, user weight/height. While I am under the weight limit of the Wallyworld Kalisto, I am barely, and while it supported me for three nights just fine, it was creaking and popping. I think it would be a good idea to maybe break up the groups into the typical weight limits on our hammocks, say under 300lbs, 300+. Since I am 5'10, I am not as in tune as to the height requirements Maybe an under 6', 6'+. Or would that meld just fine with the weight rating?

I am looking forward to adding my dream list to this as well.
