I sometimes like to use my hammock as a swing and guess what, 7/64 amsteel is no good if you want to get a good swing. First thing that breakes is Marilyn spiked part. Then goes everything else, but only if the rope has alrewdy wearen. I'm currently upgrading my suspension cause sometimes id like to hang a little bit higher and ive fallen too often. Also, with 7/64 if using too narrow toggle it tends to break more easily.

Remember to always hang on the knot and not the toggle!!! See Shug's Videos.

Yep, heavier line will not save an incorrect set up... If you are failing at the toggle, you are failing at setting up properly...
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

1" webbing with cinch buckles for me. I don't bounce as well as I used to.

Used 7/64 and 1/4 amsteel exclusively for years without a problem.

And as an Engineer all those calculations have safety factors built in so all the rope can probably handle more than they actually state.

Still, a wise man once said never hand higher than you are willing to fall.

I felt that way till I saw a 340 guy hanging from dynaglide and he had been doing it for years. While exceptional, makes me comfortable with my amsteel.

    What an amazing thread.
I wish I understood it all but I have about a total of 30 minutes hang time in my backyard in my bought on a whim HH Classic before I even found this thread. I am not anywhere near the same pay grade (or even Army) as you guys at this time.

I am just a brand new hanging enthusiast, and an accountant (not an engineer) with 5 or so fused disks in my back, compliments of a drunk driver many years ago. Bought a Hennessy Classic on an impulse. Hung it in the backyard, liked the feel but hated the suspension.

After spending enjoyable hours reading on this Forum and having several 1950 Singer HD thread injectors, I decided to make my own ultralight gear. Then.I read this. YIKES! I am now thinking logging chains and a 3 INCH high hang.

In the Army,we were extracting a stuck M-48 tank and the pretty new wrecker cable that we inspected EVERYDAY broke. "Angles on our Shoulders" that day as no one was touched by the steel whip. (Turned out to be a manufacturing defect by the lowest bidder. Rumor had it that the same manufacturer also made winch cables for Dust Off choppers that broke and dropped a Rescue Medic )

Seriously, Is there anyway that you guys can make a chart ranking the approximate breaking strength versus the approximate weight of the individual components? I was planning on building a hammock using 1.1 ripstop with cord channels on the ends, but I think I will wait for suggestions from the experienced masters here.

I weigh 200 pounds, sleep on my side and I know I change sides about every hour or less in my sleep.

I appreciate you folks and find this to be a great forum and a great hobby.

    Regards and thanks,
    Paul

Sometimes that don't help none.. Beware of rottten-to-the-core sticks out there.. DAMHIK...

oh, to the OP - I had a close-to-ground encounter on my last trip when the toggle disintegrated (I guess you didn't have to ask after all). Now I wasn't hanging over the most jagged rock I've ever seen, but I was perfectly fine. I used a tent peg for a toggle and did put my backpack under myself for the remainder of the night though...
