    Trip to the US

The wife has saved up enough air miles to fly to one of the following states Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky,
West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, or District of Columbia. We have talked it over and are considering flying down for a week and shopping for a few days and spending a few days hammock camping. What I'm looking for is some suggestions of where would be the best place to go? Great hikes with good scenery and decent shopping in the area.

West Virginia. Specifically, Dolly Sods Wilderness. Shopping is nearby at small local stores, No big box stores in Tucker County!
Any Google search of Dolly Sods Wilderness will give you plenty of information.
Not sure when you are planning to travel, but sometimes the gate into the scenic area does not open until May, especially with the kind of winter we are having, but not to worry, there are other trail heads outside of the scenic area.
It can get cold there, even in the summer with night temps in the mid to low 40's, but they are usually in the low to mid-50's in the summer. So, if you are going in the heat of summer, you will find pleasant temps in the mountains of WV. If you prefer to hang in a state park, we have plenty of those too and they are beautiful! Check out the thread on the 2013 fall MAHHA for rave reviews on Watoga SP.
I think any of the states on your list have some pretty places to visit, so no matter which one you pick, you will be happy.

    The big question is WHEN?

And what transportation will you have when you get there.

Do you want car camping that you can hammock and if so what facilities do you need or do you want to do backpacking trips.

We were thinking of mid August. The thought for camping was to fly in pick up food supplies at the destination. We would most likely get a cab to the drop of point and do a 2 to 4 day hike then get a cab to a hotel. Shop/tour the local area then fly out.

Check the calendar and trip planning sites to see if you could join a group hang.

I think this could influence you more than anything. Every state will have something to offer. The Northeast will give you variety in landscape, but there is something in every state. If you want to meet some of the folk here keep an eye on the trip planning sections. If there is an event that interests you let them know and I am sure they would be willing to help anyway that you need.

The option seem so vast and endless. A group hang would be fantastic. I appreciate any thoughts and ideas given here and we will look into them all.

I would go to vermont. Awesome outdoors and burlington is a great place to shop and check out the lake. It has a great night life and very friendly and clean as well.

There are some beautiful places here where ever you pic will be great. But plus one on michigan. I live here so I'm biased and blessed. Looking to do some out of state hikes also. So... I dont think there is a bad choice.
