    Down Info/Ordering Help Needed

I am putting together an order of down from www.featherind.com . This is the same one Arkwater ordered from. The way I figured it for the cost of the quilt I will be saving around $40 for a quilt vs ordering from Ed Speer or Thru-hiker, so please do not list that as an option.

I was sent the following in an email message and attachment.

Fill power range for down is 550 cu inches - 800 cu inches. The higher the filling power, the better the quality, bulkiness, life expectancy, and insulating capabilities. Take a look at the price list and specify what items you would like a fill power rating on and I would be glad to reply to you. The fill power rating of 95/5 grey is 750 cu inches. The 90% Canadian, Polish and Hungarian are rated at 800 cu inches. However, the 95/5 grey is a very good quality, with dense down clusters from older birds. We also have a 750 cu inch fill power Canadian Hutterite white duck down, Can 90 is the code on our price list. It is probably our best value for price vs fill power.
The following is the list of down offered

RARE UNIQUE WILDDOWN U.S.$ PER POUND

    CANADIAN ORIGIN DOWN

Can 95/5 Canadian White Goose Down 90% Net Down.......... $ 63.50
Can 85/15 Canadian White Goose Down 80% Net Down.......... $ 56.50
Can 95/5 Grey Canadian Grey Goose Down 90% Net Down.......... $ 49.00
Can 80/20 Canadian White Goose Down 75% Net Down.......... $ 52.00
Can 90 White Canadian Hutterite White Duck Down, 90% Net Down $ 41.75

    EUROPEAN ORIGIN DOWN

Polish 90 Polish White Goose Down 90% Net Down......... $ 64.50
Hungarian 90 Hungarian White Goose Down 90% Net Down......... $ 59.00

There is more offered, but I cut out the lower fill powers, I can list them if anyone wants. The 95/5 down sounds really good even though it is 750 fill vs 800 fill.

    Any thoughts from the experts.

i'm no expert, but i was at a nearby lake walking w/ some friends this past sat & there was goose down walking all around us as we sat at the picnic tables<g>.
i hadn't really made the connection w/ the canadian geese & down, but i did tell some of the others that w/ all the problems they are causing for some people, maybe it's time to lift the protection on those guys. everyone could have cooked goose .
and if it weren't such a process to collect & separate the down...
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Price per pound? Wow! Speer is $25/3oz which ends up being $133/pound. And Thru-hiker is slightly more than that. I think I might order some down.

Let's figure the weight difference for the Grey vs. the 90%.
Assume square quilt similar to the stealth 78"x48" with 1" loft.
    Total Volume= 3744ci
so for Grey we need 3744/750=5oz and for 90% we need 3744/800=4.7oz. The weight difference is negligible IMO. The cost difference is (63.5*5-49*4.7)/16=$5.45
So the cost difference is very negligible also.
Take the better quality. I am not quite sure if they are saying Grey is better quality than 90%.

Let me know how the ordering goes. The site seems to be under construction and so it would not let me get to the ordering section.

EDIT: They have a minimum of 2lbs? I would be willing to go in on that with you. I need 1lb.

HE and I are splitting the order and looking at the price list he sent me it raised some other questions (for me at least).

What's the difference between gray down and white down (besides the color, duh). Why is white more expensive? What about the differences between Canadian, Hungarian, and Polish down? Is one far superior to the other?

I got the can 90 (duck down) and it was great stuff. Closer to 800 fp than 750. Shipping will be high (around $50), don't forget to factor that into the price.

    from the faq at http://www.featherind.com/FAQ.html#9

"9. DOES COLOUR HAVE ANY RELATION TO QUALITY?

None at all. White down is preferred because it can be put into light coloured coverings without showing through. Again, quality is determined mainly by the maturity of the bird. Eider down, as an example, is dark brown."

    Ouch.

I didn't think it would be that much. I know it's gonna be a big box, but it's only going to weigh 2lb+.

    Arkwater,
You said that you actually got extra down when you ordered from them.

Guess I need to read the faq.

The down is inspected at customs. I think the shipping price reflects this. I got 34 oz for the price of 32. All in all a great experience with the company.
