    I am going to attempt...

an UQ for my bottom entry HH. Not 100% sure how I will tackle this, but I have ideas in my head and some constraints.

I need to keep this project cheap. I cannot use down. I want full coverage. A slit for the bottom entry. Small slits for my side tie-outs.

I am nervous about starting this, and since I am making a statement here and have some accountability, this project may actually come to fruition.

    resale

I have a very comfy down under quilt made from a resale shop bedspread. You might check around for something like that before you rule out the down. I think I paid $5 for mine. Good luck with the project. I would think the bottom entry would be the toughest although some well place shock cord could help with that. Perhaps offsetting the entry for the under quilt from the entry for the hammock would help eliminate some cold spots.

Anyway, I have always wondered how people dealt with the under quilt issue with a bottom entry hammock. Good luck and I am sure you will figure something out.

I just used longer shock cord at the foot end, so that when i am getting in my bottom entry HH, i just back into the hamock, and the UQ returns to full coverage after i pull in my feet. Then there is no need to have a slit in your UQ. No real cold spots to speak of.

Thanks for the info. I am not considering down due to the fact I limit my use of animal products as I try my hardest to live a vegan lifestyle.

I will search thrift stores to see what I can find.....maybe craigslist for used items.

thank you for sharing. it saddens me that people want to comment so strongly about another persons beliefs. makes me seriously consider leaving the forums. it is disheartening.

thank you to all the people had understanding and compassionate comments in that thread.

Try not to get too down on the forums, most people are very helpful

If you are looking for a down alternative check out
    http://www.downlitebedding.com/
They have some alternatives that are very cost effective compared to down.

I can't post a direct ling for some reason. soo.

In the DIY Supplies Tab on top
-look for the bulk sales(scroll down),
-then click on the drop down arrow to choose from:
    • 100% Feathers - Grey duck - Sold In 25 Pound Batches
    • 5/95 - Grey Duck Feather Blend - Sold In 5 Pound Batches
    • 10/90 - White Goose Feather Blend - Sold In 5 Pound Batches
    • 50/50 - White Goose Feather Blend - Sold in 5 Pound Batches
    • EnviroLoft - 100% Polyester - Sold In 5 Pound Batches - (Consider PrimaLoft Luxury Down Alternative)
    • PrimaLoft - Luxury Down Alternative - Sold In 5 Pound Batches
    • PrimaLoft Down - 50% White Goose Down Blended With 50% PrimaLoft - Sold In 5 Pound Batches

    • 700 Fill Power White Goose Down (85% Clusters) - Sold In 1 Pound Batches
All of these can be used in a baffle style. Also primaloft comes in a few different styles and thicknesses.

Really looking forward to seeing your hammock when it's finished! Good Luck!

I agree with Buckeyeslinger-no need to make an slit in the underquilt. I made my first one that way and when the velcro came unstitched from the hammock I never replaced it-works fine without it. Getting out of the hammock, I stick out a foot and push the underquilt aside.

FWIW - if you are not going to use down I would not mess with baffles. Seems like way too much extra work and mess filling them. I would look at differential cuts and why they are used on quilts. ;-)
    YMMV
