I am a chiropractor, who has worked with a lot of low back injuries and you are correct that a hammock can position you in such a way as to decrease the natural lumbar curve. However, you are not weight bearing when you are in a hammock and the lumbar curve is designed to dissipate forces in a world of gravity. Additionally, many disc herniations occur at the posterior(back of) the disc and non-weight bearing spinal flexion can actually help heal such problems. Of course this depends on your individual spine and postural misalignment.
