Looks like a good trip despite being cold and wet by the time you left.
I have no idea what that mound was you all were talking about.
Maybe @Firebird well jump on here and give his thoughts - he knows the area well.
One tip on hanging tarps in porch mode during rain... like AMans in the video - hang one side higher than the other and the rain won't puddle on the tarp.
Great video. looked like fun, well the rain part probably wasn't much fun. Thanks for posting.
good report. Looked fun even tho you were wet and cold. make you feel more alive.
I've been in the Birkhead Wilderness many, many times and I never tire of seeing it again. The rock wall you saw, from most everybody's opinion, is an old dam. There are actually 3 of them right there. You have to remember that in the 1800s the area could have been totally barren of trees and was farmland. We found another dam about 150' long last week in an area we are trying to add 5 more miles to the Uwharrie Trail. The chimney that has recently fallen (around last June) is on Hannah's Creek Trail and it looked like you went up Robbin's Branch and Birkhead Mtn Trail. I'm glad the rain and the freezing temps didn't coincide an get you guys in trouble. Looks like you had fun.
Hi there jstevens2010! Thanks for the map at the start. The old house was really interesting. A-Man's new set up looks great. It's cold enough when you get ice on the tarp. lol I don't know what the pile of rock was used for either - strange. Thanks for the trip report!
Looks like a nice place. Thanks for the post.
