Well it only took a few weeks after finding these forums to order a blackbird and a yeti. I am gearing up to go hiking next summer, hopefully the whole thing. Just wondering if you would take the big tarp for weather protection, or opt for something lighter and maybe easier to set up for backpacking.
I have the mambajamba (superfly without doors) and took it through some severe weather (go check out trip reports section). It is certainly good for summer. I had 60+mph wind-driven rain and only got a tiny bit wet, but having doors on at least ONE end would have been super.
Brandon would probably make you one with doors only on one end if you asked.
I'm waiting on a custom Superfly right now. Brandon is making me one with removable doors just like the one Sir White Wolf has. Send him an email!
Unless you're really good at finding places to hang in the desert or have practiced using the hammock as a bivy, you might want to have a different shelter for the first leg of the journey.
One of the things about a long thru hike - using a bounce box and mail drops allows you to swap out gear. Some research and planning, and you could be swapping a bugnet and bivy for the hammock at the strategic point where hammock hanging becomes easier.
superflys all have removeable doors now, so you could just take one or 2 big doors if you wanted. it's nice to be able to leave them in the pack unless you need them.
Planning on starting from the north end and seeing how far I can go with a hammock. Thanks for the ideas. I think the removable doors have me sold.
