    double to single layer?

I have a deep jungle xl, its a 2 layer and I used to use pads between the layers for insulation. But I've switched to underquilts now, so I don't need the double layer, and its sort of on the heavy side. I'm contemplating removing one of the layer - but I'm not sure, should I cut off the inner or outer layer, does it matter? I really like the way it lays, so I want to try and not change that. Has anyone ever done this with a HH, or have any advice / suggestions on it?

Its a side zip, not a bottom entry

I would think the best option is to sell it the way it is and buy what you want (or even swap).
Rather than butchering a perfectly good item...

It's not cold weather camping where the second layer helps me. Summer is where I find it comes in handy. The biting insects down here (Georgia) can't seem to get two layers. I used a single layer hammock one night last summer ( no pad it was 85 that night) and my back got eaten up.

I would think removing a layer would change the lay character to some extent. It probably won't feel the same.

I tried to just "buy what I want" which is essentially an Explorer Hyperlite, e-mailed HH, Tom said they've thought about it, but not this year, maybe in 2015.
The Deep Jungle is a 2 layer with the HH 30d material, the same material used in the hyperlite. The Explorer UL is a 70d material. So since I can't buy it, I figured removing one layer from a DJ should be almost the same thing as an Explorer Hyperlite (if it existed). I've got a bunch of other hammocks, homemade and store bought, but the HH are just more comfy for me. I really like the Blackbird design, but when it gets right down to getting z's, I really zonk out in the explorer or dj hammocks.

I don't think it will look too "hacked up", I was thinking I should be able to trim it right along the binding seam? I just wasn't sure whether to remove the top or bottom. I dunno, maybe it will end up trashed, but I think I going to go with removing the bottom layer - unless it stretches more than before, it should be the same "lay" I hope. I'll let you guys know how it turns out and how much weight is saved. Plus there's got to be some good DIY project with the bottom material, just don't know what yet.

I'll use pemerthrin for skeeter protection on the bottom.

I would say removing the top layer would be better. It shouldn't matter either way as far as strength, as both layers are integrated into the fold or whipping HH uses. But the layer that you have been sleeping on is bound to be a little more 'worn' than the outer, so I'd get rid of the most worn layer.

To do it right, however, You would probably need to un-gather the ends and lay it out as a big rectangle, that way you can trim the ends easier. You'll no doubt get some fraying of the material that you cut away, which should go away with time and use.

Overall it shouldn't be too big of an undertaking.

I can't imagine that a layer, no matter which one, is all that much in terms of weight and bulk. The HH is just heavier anyway, that will still be an issue. Cutting a layer to me seems a little bit like "messin' with Sasquatch" ifyouknowhatimean. I'm sure you don't want to have to go buy another $200+ product, but you have other options that are a whole lot less than that. I'd go that direction first, might find something that selling the Deep Jungle pays for and then some.

While you are at it rip out the old suspension and put on whoopee slings. That way there will be nothing left to screw up.
    YMMV
