    SuperFly vs. Mama Nature

    SuperFly vs. Mama Nature

    SuperFly: 1
    Mama Nature: 0

Anybody been watching the news and thinking; "I wonder if Cannibal got sucked up by a tornado or beaned in the head with hail"? No and yes. Too fat for the tornadoes to get me and lots of practice dodging them in Kansas as a teen. But, I did get beaned a few times with the hail.

Long version - short: Went up to the hills this weekend for a meetup event. Weather was beautiful when seen through a window, but the wind was constant all evening and night. I was under my MacCat Deluxe (sil) as I had loaned out all of my winter tarps and the wind was so strong that the tarp wall was pressed against my hammock all night; glad it wasn't raining. I was even set-up on the leeward side of Genuine Draft who was using a SuperFly and still had wind issues.

Anyway, come Sunday morning Mama Nature figured if the wind wouldn't get us then maybe some hail. Threw the SuperFly up and huddled underneath for about 20 minutes. You know that feeling when you're in your car, stuck in a hailstorm and you keep waiting for the next one to shatter your windshield...that's how it felt. I was all worried, but the SuperFly held marvelously. First time in a bad hailstorm under a tarp. I've been in a few with penny sized hail, but this was golf ball sized and up stuff; hurt like heck! It was fun watching the hail from inside the tarp, but a little nerve racking. Love my SuperFlies!

    That's it, have fun!

Like I posted in my trip reports, I got quarter to half dollar sized hail for about 10 minutes in the middle of the worst wind-driven rainstorm I've ever seen in the ozarks. I know the feeling... I was just waiting for the tarp to fail. I had no idea these things were tough enough to handle giant hail.

Of course, it was also raining and gusting over 60mph, so if my tarp HAD failed, all sorts of other bad things would have followed (this was my first trip using down insulation, a fact which was right at the top of my mind). Plus, it was about 3:00 in the AM.

ETA: I've read all these posts about spinn not being as tough as sil... would a spin tarp have made it through all that?

I don't know. I would imagine it would, but not something I'd want to try on purpose.

Too fat for tornadoes? No such thing.

Glad you came through unscathed. I was wondering if you had had any experiences with the recent weather over there.

I seem to bring tornadoes with me everywhere I live. My first week living in Colorado back in the early 90s, we had 2 tornadoes. My 3rd month in Rhode Island was a tornado. Had a tornado the 2nd month I was in Florida. At least this time she waited 10 months before throwing one at me.

But to be fair, the tornadoes were down in the Denver area, not up in the mountains. Glad I missed them. The SuperFly is pretty darn Super, but I don't think it would have been long for this world in a tornado. Maybe it would have blown over to China. Then they could see what a 'quality' tarp looks like.
