I agree that the pad adds weight, and that it should be factored in. But, in summer temps I don't need any pad under my legs with a 2/3 quilt. YMMV.

the pad/weight argument is valid if you only use that pad in the hammock. For those of us backpackers that use a pad for under our legs, under our butts, and as a pack frame, its worth the weight. anything is worth the weight if it serves 2-3x duty.

And to add another point, my pack works just fine under my feet/legs; no 'extra' pad required. Plus, we are talking about a summer trip. I don't need anything under my legs till temps get in the high 30s to low 40s.

I'm not even sure that argument would work for a winter trip in my case. Again, the pack goes under my feet/legs and probably gives me a better layer of insulation than a pad would while also providing the knee break that many people enjoy.

Cannibal, is there any particular way you lay your pack in there? Crossways? Lengthways? I have a Z55, so I'll have a frame to deal with whereas you don't, IIRC, but I was jonesing for something under my knees.

Didn't think about the framed packs. You're right; point conceeded. My packs go in lengthwise.

i've found that a stuffsac under my knees does alot. insulates my knees of course, but since my knees are raised, my tq can loft a good bit under my calves. i think i could get by with a much shorter pad than i've been using.

i agree with cannibal and angrysparrow, you can probably get by with no leg pad in summer temps, or at least just your regular sit pad under your feet, the last few times i've slept out i had none at all and was pretty good.

My summer setup is a JRB Stealth Long ontop and a JRB Shenandhoah on the bottom. Nice and light with no worries.

For summer temps, a 2/3 quilt is the way to go. Check out the Warbonnet Yeti, or PM Pan about the availability of their 2/3 quilt.

you guys kick @ss!!! i've seen suggestions of putting the pack into the hammock to insulate legs, but it never SOUNDED very comfortable. sooooo, now i see that it might even be comfortable, too -- and free insulation! will try it with my vapor trail next time. hell, by the time i'm ready to climb into my hammock, my pack and some food is about all that's left! that'll give me a place to store my pack, too.
