    Hammock width

Ok, I have searched and can't seem to find a dedicated discussion on an ideal hammock width. It seems the general consensus is an 11' long hammock if you are ~6' tall or more, but let's talk width.

Is there an ideal? Like 60 - 63 is ideal, more only adds weight and no improvement to lay, less negatively affects lay.... Etc....

If have only lay in one hammock please state that so readers can gauge the validity of your opinion.

I've got one 55" wide hammock, but I really prefer 60" wide hammocks. I don't see any point in going wider - just a bunch of floppy material and extra weight.

I have 4 tablecloth hammocks and the one that is most comfortable is my 72" wide. I agree with SilvrSurfr on the extra weight and fabric. I did the knotty mod on mine and that took care of the floppy sides and I am willing to carry the extra weight for the comfort. I am 6'1 and about 280 so if I was smaller I may be more comfy in a more narrow hammock.

Mine is 12' long and 64" wide. There's a calf ridge, but my legs go right past it, so its not a problem. I have no empirical data to support the claim, but long and wide seems to provide a flatter lay.

    Thumbs up

My diy gathered end is 60 wide, but thats only because the fabric i wanted to use only came in 62 inch widths, i would like it to be alittle wider, the 72 w sounds perfect to me, but it really comes down to personal preferance, you could attend a group hang and others would be happy to let you test out thier hammocks..

Thanks for the video post Mad. Anxious to hear from others, as I know there are many that are pro - wide. Or maybe it is just a "bigger is better" mentality and there is no real advantage....... Hmm mm.

My DIY hammock is 72"wide and it's about 1' too wide. There's about 6" of floppy materiel on each side. I bet the a fore mentioned Knotty mod would solve the floppiness but, it seems like it's more material, therefore; more weight than necessary.

My first DIY was 60" wide and 11' long. It was great, but unhemmed, so it is looking messy.. Then I got a wide tablecloth--90" wide and 10 1/2 long. 90 inches wide is too wide, IMHO. The edges were floppy, and it was hard to get in and out of. NOw I'm trying a 60" wide and 10 1/2 long tablecloth. I'm thinking 72" may be perfect, though. Oh, I'm just under 6' and 250 lbs, if that makes a difference.

My last hammock was 58inches wide by 11ft and it was very comfortable. I wouldn't go wider for me. I am 5'8".
