the little folder icons

So I don't know if it's just me but these icons seem to do what they want...
Some of them are open white, open orange, closed, etc... regardless of me reading the posts or not. I thought they were a tool to clearly and rapidly see the threads you've already read. Or am I totally wrong and confused. (well OK I know I am confused...)

I wondered the same thing though I was thinking it had to do with thread popularity.

From the forum view page (not from inside a thread) scroll down to the bottom of the page. There's a guide to what the icons mean:

I never did either, to be honest. I've seen it on a bunch of forums - I guess it's one of those built in features of the forum software. I always just ignore them - though I'm sure someone finds use in them.
