Too heavy ????

Has anyone ever used this heavy a material to make a winter tarp?
_{61 inch width, Coyote Brown Nylon Ripstop 2.25 ounces/square yard DWR Durable Water Repellent, Non-Ravel Polyurethane Coating, .}.....Its alittle thicker than i thought it would be but i filled a jar with water and banded a piece on top for a lid and turned it upside down, it has been 4 hours and not one drop of water has seeped thru,..I dont mind the wieght for a car camping winter tarp.
Any thoughts,, and please - be nice !......

Yes, that is it, i need to make a super large tarp as my bridge is very long and wide, it is gonna take about 20 yards in all, but i need to find the best deal that i can for fabric because, well, things are tight!!
I had sent another member the 20 yards of material that i had bought before of some really nice sylnyl but they decided to disapear and they dont respond to emails or phone calls anymore, since they got my stuff a few weeks ago.
So if i have to use something alittle heavy to save money , thats what i will do, i just would feel better if someone else had some experiance with this particular fabric...The tarp that i have now is alittle to short and with the pole mod the doors are too small as well.
I just thought it best to use that one for summer and make a new one for winter, .

can always find a kelty noah 16 x 16 tarp. got mine for 75$ on amazon. huge and an easy pole mod as wellP1040031.JPG

Just be aware that ordering from Magna Fabrics, you have to order the whole roll that they have specified. They don't cut yardage for you. They also ship on the roll as well, so you will get charged accordingly for the shipping.

All true, but keep in mind Zilla, you could also do a Will Call pickup. They aren't that far away from you. An hour north on the NJTPK maybe.

If it's waterproof, it'll work for a tarp. It might be heavy and bulky, but as long as it keeps the rain and wind off...

That being said, if you intend upon backpacking with it (I know you said that this is for car camping, but I've found that every time I've said that, it's wound up being more money to buy an item better suited to backpacking later), I'd definitely recommend either a smaller tarp or a lighter fabric (or both). Your back and knees will thank you.

Is the 2.25 oz/y before or after coating? It should be fine though either way so long as it's waterproof. You may want to get some seam tape for it though, not sure how sil based seam sealers will work but everything with polyurethane coatings I have seen has taped seams.

I currently use a Kelty Footprint as a backup tarp.
It is coated, DWR 1800 and roughly 2-2.2oz/sq yd

It is a bit heavy but plenty durable as it is a foot print.

For a car camping tent it is fine.
The tarp/footprint I have is pretty small so weight isn't an issue.

If the price is right and you are satisfied with the specs, I say go for it.

My only concern is the 61" width, would prefer 65-66 to get an extra 10" width when 2 pieces are sewn together.
Don't know if they have anything wider or not.

I'll say this, the price does sound good and I would go for a 25-30 yards if you were willing to part with some.
