Perhaps, but Amsteel is so incredibly light, I don't see the penalty for a bit longer than 3'. Having said that, one penalty is tangling cordage and having ends lay on the ground at night, providing a highway for insects to climb up.

Also, as another mentioned, long suspension lines are a waste, as you'd have to climb the trees to get the 30-degree angle.

I think I'll compromise on my next set and make them 5'. And if those are too short, I carry a 3' piece of "dogbone" for such cases.

I tend to use longer straps so my whoopies are 4'. Don't know why I do this, but it works for me.

I do the same. Not only does it give the versatility to use short spaces, with a Dutch whoopie hook or similar hardware, there is a built in water stop. Plus, this allows me to store the suspension separately from the hammock if it's wet or covered in tree sap.

This is why I've been using webbing and buckles. I have a long hammock and I find myself needing to find trees much further apart with standard whoopies. Typically those trees are larger, or if not there tends to be more brush in between.

I'd like to try whoopies again, though... where can I get short ones?
