Thread: Lost new guy

    Lost new guy

Great site and lots of info, thanks to those that contribute, been searching around for a while but finally signed up. I am into backpacking and bikepacking and have always been a tent guy, but now am looking to hand out in the trees and see how the other half live. So where do I start, I am looking for a relatively light weight setup that will be used in 3 seasons (not much into cold weather) and want to stay dry.

How much are you looking to spend? What's your weight limit (how lightweight do you want it)? Would you consider DIY?

DIY from someone on here. I don't really know much about what I bought, but I'm sure it's real nice. I'm gonna look, dissect and learn from this one.

I am a newbie too but I have ordered and laid in a bunch of different hammocks. My opinion is to try a Grand Trunk Ultralight or ENO to start out. There relatively cheap and you can add a Buginator from Butts In A Sling and you have a enclosed system for the bugs. While your hanging in one of those hammock you can scour the Hammock Forum for opinions on the next Hammock. Even though I have bought other hammocks I always come back to my Grand Trunks Ultra Light. Have fun and don't be surprised if you become addicted!!!

Welcome. I was lost also with the amount of info and great vendors available. I had to make spreadsheets of what I liked vs cost/weight/size. Best part is experimenting and finding new things. I've changed suspensions five times in the year I've been in a hammock.

Welcome. There is a HF "where are you" google map here someplace, maybe use that and find an active hanger in your town. Meet up and check out his gear.
Consider getting the book "The Ultimate Hang". TONS of good information and drawings....
Look in the Group Hang sub-forum to see if there is a group "hanging out" near you in the near future. Post on that forum and see if someone has some spare gear they would let you try out.

Welcome to the addiction. Good advice so far. Before you spend a bundle try a group hang where you will see various setups. Most folks there will probably be willing to give you a test lie plus you can actually see what people are talking about. Watch the announcement forum and you will see them announced. You can also ask if someone in your neighborhood has something you are interested in.
