Exclamation Interesting tidbit for tree strap users

Did you know that the position of the eye of the strap on your tree can greatly reduce the load rating?
Shown here, an angle of 120 degrees or more which is basically with the eye opening on the same side as your hammock equals 100% of rating. But if you move the eye to the side of the tree to the 30* angle you reduce the rating by 50%. In other words, a tree strap rated at 500 lbs will only be rated for 250lbs with the eye on the side of the tree.

Hmmm, looks like the folks with marginal gear need to pay attention.

Good Info! Makes sense when you consider the drop in strength of ropes the tighter you bend them.

    Thank You!

Very useful post! I recently pointed this out to a hanger who had their strap doubled back upon itself.

I have been trying to explain this to some people for a long time, the illustration helps alot, i know that Dutch has been trying to convay the same pricaple to users of the Dutch clips as well, it takes alot of stress off of the point of connection, but seeing is believing.Thanks.......

This is good info. I usually run mine ate about a 90 degree angle with the thinking it will pull it around the tree a little tighter so it will not slip. I understand this is probably stupid but it made sense in my head the first time I set a hammock up and just havent quit doing it. I am going to have to be more aware of that when I setup next time.
